สำนักศาสนาและสวนนอสเทลล์ – Nostell Priory and Parkland

อังกฤษเป็นประเทศชอบของเก่า สะสมของเก่า และบางครั้งก็เหมือนจะหากินกับของเก่าด้วย แนวคิดเก็บของเดิมทำให้มีงานศิลปะและวรรณกรรมหลากหลายคงเหลือที่สืบทอดกันมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ทั้งงานเลื่องชื่อของวิลเลียม เช็คสเปียร์  เรือนหรือคฤหาสน์ยังได้รับการเก็บรักษาไว้จากแต่ก่อนอีกด้วย

People in the UK like to collect old stuff; they like old things and sometimes they even make a profit from trading old collectable stuff. This idea that we should keep “old stuff” helps to preserve many pieces of art and works of literature service, such as Shakespeare’s work to the present day. Mansions and stately homes are also preserved in a state left from a previous time.

บ้านเรือนหรืออาคารที่มีคุณค่าทางประวัติศาสตร์ของอังกฤษอยู่ภายใต้การดูแลขององค์กรแนชันแนลทรัสต์ (National Trust )หรือถ้าแปลก็คงประมาณว่าเป็นองค์กรทรัสต์แห่งชาติ ซึ่งหน้าที่หลัก ๆ ขององค์กรคือการดูแล บูรณะ บ้าน อาคาร สวน ตั้งแต่ชายหาดไปจนถึงชนบท

Many historical houses and buildings are owned by the National Trust which has its main responsibilities to take care of, renovate and conserve houses, buildings, and gardens across the country from coast to rural areas.

แนวคิดการอยู่ในชนบทของอังกฤษจะต่างจากของไทย ยุคอุตสากรรมเฟื่องฟู โรงงานอุตสาหกรรมเริ่มก่อตั้งในเขตตัวเมือง  ทำให้เมืองปนเปื้อนไปด้วยมลภาวะ  คนมีเงินก็พากันย้ายออกจากตัวเมือง ไปอยู่ชนบท แนวคิดการอยู่กับธรรมชาติ บ้านที่มีพื้นที่ อากาสดี น้ำใส คนอังกฤษมองว่าตอบโจทก์คุณภาพชีวิตได้มากกว่า  คนมีเงินจึงจะไม่ค่อยอยู่ในเมือง

The concept of living in the country is different from Thailand. When industry was at its peak, factories in the city were very polluting and many affluent families moved away from the city to the country. They believed that living in nature, owning a house with space, fresh air and clear water would provide them a better quality of life than living in the city.

วันนี้ได้ไปที่นอสแทลไพออรีแอนด์ปาร์คแลนด์ (Nostell Priory and Parkland) หรือคฤหาสน์สำนักศาสนาและสวนนอสเทลล์ คฤหาสน์นี้เป็นของตระกูลวินน์ (Winn) มาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1650 ซึ่งทางครอบครัวก็ได้สะสมภาพวาดของ ปีเตอร์ บรูเกล รุ่นเยาว์  (Pieter   Brueghel the Younger) ซึ่งเป็นบุตรชายของปีเตอร์ บรูเกล รุ่นก่อน  (Pieter Brueghel the older) บูรเกลคนพ่อเป็นจิตรกรชื่อดังสมัยเรเนสสองซ์ มีเชื้อสายผสมดัช เฟลมิช งานดัง ๆ ของบูรเกลคนพ่อคืองานภาพวาดภูมิประเทศ และภาพวาดชาวบ้านก่อนยุคอุตสาหกรรม ส่วนงานจิตรกรรมที่คฤหาสนอสเทลนี้เป็นของบูรเกลคนลูก ซึ่งภาพวาดสำคัญ ๆ จะเป็นภาพภูมิประเทศ บุคคลสำคัญทางศาสนา เรื่องราวจากไบเบิ้ลและภาพการใช้ชีวิตในบ้านนอก

Today, I went to visit Nostell Priory and Parkland. This estate belonged to the Winn family since 1650 and is home to a large collection of paintings by Pieter Brueghel the younger, son of Pieter Brueghel the older. Brueghel the older was a famous Dutch-Flemish painter of the Renaissance period. His main works were landscapes and paintings of the pre-industrial peasantry. However, the collection in Nostell was by the son, Pieter Brueghel the younger, who is famous for his landscapes, religious portraits, and  scenes in the country.

Nostell is also home of the first grandfather landcase clock, built by John Harrison. This historical clock marked the measurement of longitude before satellite time. Knowing the exact longitude and latitude is crucial for safe navigation. Latitude is easy to measure, it can taken from measuring the noon sun or various stars in the evening. But at the time, measuring accurately longitude time was very difficult, particularly at sea due to the unstableness of the sea. This was found to be biggest obstacle. The inaccuracy of longitude measurement resulted in ships going further and longer which caused the crew to face problems such as scurvy, starvation or death. Errors in the calculation of longitude could also cause shipwreck.

So how did John Harrison become the hero in this quest to accurately calculate longitude. Many scientists proposed many theories. One idea came originally from Johannes Werners, who suggested measuring the moon’s position. Later, Galileo suggested calculating from Jupiter’s four satellites. This method proved to work on land but not while at sea. Many others tried to solve the problem, for example Edmund Halley and Tobias Mayer. John Harrison was a carpenter. He created mechanical timepieces to be carried onboard. He was able to build a reliable chronometer which proved to work accurately at sea. The UK parliament rewarded Harrison for building the longcase clock. This clock was kept at Nostell.

ให้รักษาความสะอาดบริเวณโถงคนใช้ และจะปิดโถงตอนสี่ทุ่มครึ่ง”

Although many estates were designed to be a show house, to impress visitors, Nostell also designed for every day use as well. But it never fails to impress their visitors, even nowadays.

แม้คฤหาสน์หลายแห่งจะได้รับการออกแบบมาให้สร้างความประทับใจกับแขกผู้มาเยือน คฤหาสน์นอสเทลได้รับการออกแบบมาสำหรับการใช้งานด้วย และยังคงสร้างความประทับใจกับแขกที่มาเยือนจนถึงปัจจุบัน
